However, it isn't the forces of nature that have done the most damage to the 3.5 million American citizens who live here, but a history of economic exploitation, forced dependency and systemic racism coming from the United States. The island, which many see as the last colony in the Western Hemisphere, is still a US unincorporated territory. The film traces the life of Harvard graduate Juan Segarra who, knowing the history of his island and its relations with the USA, becomes a member of Los Macheteros. This Porto Rican independence movement wants to achieve its goals through armed combat. Juan is aware that the struggle for a free Puerto Rico will lead to either jail or death. A moving story about the universal human need to fight for one’s identity.
