Explores catalogue of errors that occurred in the run-up to the nuclear disaster, examining newly declassified evidence from the KGB archives about the safety of the plant. The programme examines concerns that had been voiced while the nuclear plant was still under construction, but which were ignored by the Soviet leaders. Ch2. Explores how far Soviet leaders were willing to go to cover up the Chernobyl disaster, including exposing children to toxic fallout at the Kyiv May Day parade to prove to the world that all was fine. Featuring first-hand accounts from those who survived the blast, including Oleksiy Ananenko, who braved radioactive waters to prevent a deadlier second explosion and Maryna Sivets, whose unborn child's life was put at risk.
